United reached the FA Cup final for the fourth time in six seasons and finally they won. As in 1908, they faced Second Division opposition in Barnsley and once again they failed to win at Sydenham. But this time they got a draw and adopted a much more physical approach to win 2-0 in the replay.
Albert Shepherd got both the goals in the replay and thus became the first United player to top the 30-goal mark in a season. Four of his goals came in the first half of the match at Liverpool but he still ended up on the losing side as the home side came back from a 5-2 interval deficit to win 6-5.
A comparatively disappointing League campaign saw United fail to win on a consistent basis and finish in 4th for the fourth time in six seasons.
Attendances dropped slightly but United were still a great draw and the match at Chelsea attracted a new League record attendance of 70,000.

R1 - Despite an early goal United failed to adapt their style for playing on a morass and needed a replay to secure their passage.
R2 - The Magpies dispensed with their short-passing and played a powerful, thrusting game on a swamp-like pitch.
R3 - As in the previous Round the Magpies didn't waste time with a short-passing game and they swung the ball about with strong, accurate kicks and won comfortably.
QF - On another very heavy and treacherous ground it was a hard, open game of football. Newcastle were in top form and there was no club in the country playing better.
SF - Both sides struggled with a hard ground and lively ball but as the game settled United mastered their opponents in what was a game of bustle against science.
Fin - Although the Magpies failed to win at Crystal Palace for the third time in six years; they finally won the Cup with a much better performance at Goodison Park.
