Another season of upheaval on Tyneside as United narrowly miss relegation to the Championship after a disastrous run of form in the last two months of the season within which they suffered eight consecutive defeats.

United eventually finished 4 points clear of 18th placed Hull, but their survival was only confirmed in the final round of matches when United beat West Ham 2-0 on a memorable day at St. James'.

The club made a lot of signings from the continent during the summer and as they struggled to adapt to English football a bad start led to increasing unrest amongst the crowd with calls for Alan Pardew to be sacked.

A run of five consecutive victories in the League and an excellent Cup victory at Manchester City temporarily reduced the vitriol, but when four defeats followed, including a 4-0 reverse at Tottenham in the League Cup Quarter-Final and a home defeat to Sunderland, the anger rose again. Pardew resigned, joining Crystal Palace, after the home win over Everton at the end of the year.

Coach John Carver was put in temporary charge and then (despite making a bad start) was given the job until the end of the season.

United's form dipped alarmingly and a run of ten defeats in twelve games meant that United's Premiership future was in the balance until the final game of the season.

Newcastle started badly and were in 18th having failed to win any of their first seven Premier League games.

Six weeks later they had reached 5th after United won five-in-a-row with Pardew receiving the manager of the month award for November as a result.

December was a month of contrasting form as the Magpies became the first team to beat Chelsea in any competition this season, but also lost at home to Sunderland once more. Tired of the abuse he was receiving from the fans, Pardew made use of an escape route to Crystal Palace.

Pardew’s last match in charge was a 3-2 win over Everton which left Newcastle in 9th place. At that time they were 5 points behind 6th-placed West Ham and 10 points clear of Palace in 18th.

Coach John Carver was appointed caretaker and despite a run of two defeats and a draw in the Premiership and another loss in the FA Cup Third Round, he was appointed head-coach until the end of the season.

Carver’s first six games garnered 9 points and then from the start of March the team suffered eight consecutive defeats, the club’s worst run in the Premier League. The last game in the run was a 3-0 defeat at Leicester which saw both Williamson and Janmaat sent-off and Carver suggesting that the former got himself dismissed deliberately.

With three games to go Newcastle were one point above the relegation positions and one of six clubs that could be relegated. They beat West Brom but then lost at QPR so relegation was still a possibility on the final day.

United led Hull by two points, but had a much worse goal difference so only a win would guarantee survival. Having returned following cancer treatment Jonas Gutierrez scored the second goal in a 2-0 win over West Ham whilst the Tigers played out a goalless draw with Manchester United. And with Sunderland and Villa both getting beat the Magpies jumped a couple of places.

Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback contentiously joined United on a free after his contract ran out on Wearside, but there was also significant outlay during the summer.

Almost £30m was spent on bringing a number of players across from the continent. Two Dutch internationals; midfielder Siem de Jong (who followed his brother to Tyneside) and right-back Daryl Janmaat. French international midfielder Remy Cabella and former Under-21 striker Emmanuel Riviere. Tenerife youngster Ayoze Perez was another addition.

A further £7m was spent on a couple of promising Nottingham Forest youngsters (Lascelles and Darlow) who were immediately loaned back to the Championship side to continue their development.

At the end of the campaign faithful servants Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez were released.

New signings Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles were both loaned back to Nottingham Forest for the season.

Hatem Ben Arfa and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa were deemed surplus to requirements and both sent out on season-long loan deals. Both left the club permanently in January.

In February Davide Santon went to Inter Milan and Newcastle controversially sent five players on loan to Rangers.
