2013/14 was a season of two-halves for United. After a mixed start a run of 7 wins in 9 games up to Christmas took the Magpies up to 6th place and they once again looked like candidates for a European place. But 14 defeats in 20 games after Christmas resulted in United tumbling down to 10th.
However the first signs of trouble came before the season started. Ashley once more shocked and enraged supporters with the controversial appointment of Ex-manager Joe Kinnear as director of football on a three-year contract.
In an excruciating interview on Talksport he made a number of false claims whilst also mispronouncing the names of both players and officials of the club. Managing Director Derek Llambias resigned as a result of the appointment and Kinnear resigned himself in February.
Hours before the first game Arsenal made a “disrespectful” £10 million bid for Yohan Cabaye. United turned down the offer, but an incensed Cabaye refused to play in protest. He missed a number of games before returning to the fold and then moving to PSG in January.
Alan Pardew was sent off at Hull after he pressed his head against Hull’s David Meyler; it wasn’t a headbutt, but the intention was clearly there.
With supporter dissatisfaction rising again a march was held against owner Mike Ashley's regime prior to the home game against Liverpool.
Papiss Cisse initially refused to wear the new Wonga sponsored shirts due to his religious beliefs before he eventually backed down.

After an inconsistent start 4 wins in a row during November took United up to 5th and earned Alan Pardew the Manager of the Month award. Three more wins in five games up to Christmas cemented the Magpies place in the top six. Within that run Newcastle won 1–0 at Old Trafford for the first time since February 1972.
But then United went into free fall. They lost 6 of the next 8 games, failing to score in 7 of them. At the end of the run they lost 3-0 at Chelsea and 3-0 and 4-0 at home to Sunderland and Tottenham respectively. With Cabaye also leaving there was an air of crisis.
A run of 3 wins in 4 temporarily lifted the gloom, but this was followed by 7 defeats in 8 games up until the end of the season. United finished in 10th.
