Armed with a hefty transfer kitty, Mather looked to bring in his own men and even made audacious enquiries for England international Sammy Crooks and a young Stanley Matthews.
In the end he brought in the experienced Harry Ware and gave a number of youngsters their legs including Jimmy Gordon, Ed Connelly and Albert Harris who had all been signed by Cunningham towards the end of the previous season.
There was no instant transformation though and United struggled to find any consistency. A run of 1 win in 11 games in the New Year saw the club plummeting down the table but they recovered well to banish any thoughts of relegation.
Walsall and Sheffield Wednesday were beaten on the way to a 5th round tie against Arsenal in the FA Cup. A six goal thriller at St James' was followed by a comprehensive defeat at Highbury.
The first game with The Gunners was watched by 62,391 (United's record FA Cup attendance) and although the average crept up slightly only 4,000 turned up for the visit of Norwich at the end of February.
