Another poor season for United as they finished 15th; but there were far more pressing things on people’s minds as War was declared on Germany just prior to the start of the season.

The government had decreed that football should continue as a "spirit raiser"; but this was based on the perception that the conflict would be short-lived. When it became clear that this was not the case opposition began to grow and the League was abandoned at the end of the season.

Not surprisingly attendances slumped with United's average dropping by 10,000 and it was common to see much of the crowd consisting of uniformed soldiers who were admitted at half price.

United still hadn't found an adequate replacement for Shepherd and despite a productive season from Hibbert, they once again struggled to find the net on a regular basis.

They remained in the bottom half of the table for much of the season and eleven wins was United's equal worst total since entering the League.

They reached the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup where they lost to a Chelsea side that would be relegated at the end of the season.

League Division 1

The Magpies downward trajectory continued as they finished 15th; their lowest finish since being promoted to Division 1.

United didn't start too badly and when they beat Sheffield United 4-3 at St. James' on October 24th they moved up to 6th. But they followed this up by losing 5 of the next 6.

Results continued to be poor and after a 2-1 home defeat by Middlesbrough at the beginning of March, United fell to 18th, one place above the relegation positions.

However they did just enough to finish three points ahead of 19th placed Chelsea who were relegated along with Tottenham.
