The Magpies' Edwardian dominance was at an end as they suffered their worst League season since 1901/02.

With Albert Shepherd still not fit (he only played eight games) United struggled up front and only managed 47 goals (the fourth worst) with Jimmy Stewart top scorer with a mere 9.

And despite the fact they had the fourth best defence (also 47 goals) the lack of power upfront meant a lowly fourteenth place.

The directorate certainly threw money at the problem with over £2,000 being invested in McDonald, McTavish and Peart amongst others, but they only managed a dozen goals between them.

The season started well enough and a 6-0 thrashing of Everton secured 2nd place at the end of October, but a disastrous run saw them tumble into mid-table by the end of the year and they remained marooned there.

It was left to the FA Cup to provide some excitement in which they reached the Quarter-Final only to lose to Sunderland.

Despite the decline in fortunes the average attendance climbed by just over 3,000

League Division 1

United ended up in 14th; their worst finish for ten years.

After the first couple of months Newcastle were in 2nd after a decent start to the season which included a 6-0 win at Everton.

But by the end of the year the Magpies had fallen to 12th after a run of 8 defeats in 10 games.

Although their home form improved in the New Year their away performances continued to be poor. However, it was United's form on Tyneside which let them down overall as they only won 2 more games than they lost.
