Scorers: Fell (p), Kerray, Rankmore og, Hilley - Hole (2), Hooper, Charles

A GREAT DISPLAY UNITED - A pulsating game played in heatwave conditions which United should have won. They lead 3-1 at the break and could have had more and are then pegged back twice after the break. They are not helped by Thompson suffering double vision and star-man Kerray badly bruised ribs.

22/08 - D2: Middlesbrough 4 Newcastle 2 (1-1)

Middlesbrough (15th) - Ayresome Park - 30,611

Hollins, Keith, McMichael, Wright, Thompson, Dalton, Suddick, Hilley, Thomas, Kerray, Fell

Scorers: Fell, Thomas - Peacock, Gibson, Kaye (p), Burbeck

Position: 15th

NEWCASTLE PAY THE PENALTY - United once again show a progressive spirit, but less players are on form and they concede four once more with the defence creaking alarmingly at times. Middlesbrough’s third, ten minutes from time, causes mayhem as the referee awards a controversial penalty after Thompson handles, United’s pivot claiming he had been pushed. The referee is surrounded by Unitedplayers and some of the fans try and get in on the act too.

Portsmouth (15th) - SJP - 35,214

Hollins, McKinney, McMichael, Wright, Thompson, Dalton, Hale, Hilley, Thomas, Kerray, Fell

Scorers: Thomas - Barton

Position: 15th

AXE DEADWOOD MR. HARVEY - McKinney comes in for Keith (groin) and Hale replaces the dropped Suddick Newly-promoted Portsmouth take an early lead and their slick play has United bamboozled for thirty minutes. Thomas heads an equaliser just after the hour and Pompey are happy to defend in numbers from then on. Alan Sleeman describes the match as pure, unadulterated rubbish accusing United of fiddling and fumbling incompetently.

29/08 - D2: Newcastle 6 Middlesbrough 1 (2-1)

Middlesbrough (17th) - SJP - 41,550

Hollins, McKinney, Ferguson, Neale, Thompson, Dalton, Hale, Hilley, Thomas, Kerray, Fell

GLORY NIGHT FOR UNITED WITH HALE - HILLEY SWITCH KNOCKING BORO FOR SIX - McMichael and Wright are dropped and replaced by Ferguson and Neale. Barrie Thomas nets a hat-trick and Hale a brace in a thrashing of injury-hit Boro. The turning point comes at the start of the second period when Hale and Hilley swop positions. It is a nightmare debut for goalkeeper Arthur Lightening who only signed from Coventry today who also suffers a couple of injuries..

01/09 - D2: Preston 2 Newcastle 1 (1-1)

Preston (21st) - Deepdale - 13,884

Hollins, McKinney, Ferguson, Neale, Thompson, Dalton, Hilley, Hale, Thomas, Kerray, Fell

Scorers: Hale - Wilson, Alston

Position: 12th

SMALL BEER WINGERS MADE UNITED FROTH - Both wingers score for winless Preston to give them a deserved victory, they are stronger and more thrustful than the Magpies. The forwards and full-backs in particular are poor.

04/09 - D2: Scunthorpe 2 Newcastle 1 (0-0)

Scunthorpe (9th) - Old Show Ground - 13,953

Hollins, Keith, McMichael, Neale, Thompson, Dalton, Hilley, Suddick, Kerray, Hale, Fell

Scorers: Kerray - Wilson, McGuigan

Position: 13th

THIS IS BETTER, UNITED- Suddick comes in for Thomas (ankle) and both full-backs are replaced. Kerray is asked to play in the centre. Scunthorpe maintain their 100% home record with a power-hose second half performance and a winner from United discard John McGuigan. But it is a vastly improved and spirited team effort from Newcastle.

United are rather fortunate to be ahead at half-time as the defence is unsteady against the more incisive forward play of their hosts. The game is still in the balance until the last twenty minutes when the Magpies score four.
