Leeds are unbeaten in 32 home games in the League and in the first-half they display their usual authority, control the match and take the lead. But after the break United start to match their opponents for both skill and application and get a deserved equaliser. It is a pulsating match which always carries an undercurrent of violence with the biggest flashpoint coming when Foggon raises a foot in a challenge on Sprake which leads to him being surrounded by angry men in white. The programme includes a statement advising that the Boys Gate will be closed for the game against Derby due to the continued pitch encroachments by youngsters, however it doesn’t stop a number of them coming on after Newcastle equalise.

Smith makes his long awaited full League debut against newly promoted Derby County. The Rams go to the top of the League having ended United's unbeaten home run which has stretched back for 26 matches. County are in control for most of the game with their combination of fast open attacking and strong, resilient defence.

After the game an estimated two thousand United fans battle with the visiting supporters. A large group attack the Derby Supporters’ coaches at the Gallowgate Bus Station. Pebbles, coins and half-bricks are thrown and windows on two (out of four) of the coaches are smashed. Every policeman available - along with five dogs - is sent to the scene but with both sets of fans sporting the same colours they find it difficult to stop the violence. A number of people are given on-the-spot treatment for minor injuries but no arrests are made.

Struggling Palace give United some of their own treatment by adopting an unadventurous policy which results in a desperately dull game and another goalless draw. Palace leave only one man upfront and that is defender Hynd. Newcastle's functional through-the-middle football is unadventurous in the extreme; Ford suffers an ankle injury.

The first ever Friday evening match at SJP. Within ten minutes United concede a disastrous own goal when Thompson stretches out a leg (as Jimmy Pearce shapes to shoot) and - although he only toe-pokes it - the ball goes through McFaul's hands and legs. Anderlecht include four players who played for Belgium against England a couple of weeks ago and also have Dutch international Mulder and Swedish international Nordahl. Newcastle are lucky to escape with a two goal defeat in Brussels as Mulder destroys United in a performance that coach Smith describes as their worst for 18 months. Only an inspired display from McFaul prevents a rout. An undaunted Harvey declares: "now we shall see how big these Belgian hearts are on Tyneside next Wednesday".

After their mauling in the first leg few people give United a chance of Fairs Cup progression. But with a strong wind behind them Robson scores twice in the first twenty minutes and when Dyson makes it 3-0 six minutes from time the Magpies are on their way to the semi-finals. But four minutes later the Belgians pull one back and the Magpies are out on the away goals rule. Harvey concedes that the players lost concentration after their third goal believing they had won. Meanwhile, the victorious Anderlecht party are none too happy with Newcastle's approach accusing them of "brutality".

lt is the 100th Tyne Wear derby and Sunderland are in bottom place and in grave danger of relegation. Only a world class performance from Sunderland custodian Montgomery prevents a United victory. Wyn Davies has a goal chalked off after he shoulder charges Montgomery into the net. He claims it was a legitimate challenge, but referee Fussey says he disallowed it because Davies barged into his chest. This was not the case, but he did charge him when he was airborne so the goal should not have been allowed anyway.
