A boring game in which a brilliant display by Aberdeen keeper Clark prevents a bigger victory.

Aberdeen - SJP -

McFaul, Craig, Clark, Elliot, McNamee, lley, Robson B, Bennett, Davies, Ross, Sinclair

Tommy Craig plays for the Dons instead of Jimmy Smith who is serving a suspension.

West Ham - SJP - 37,307

McFaul, Craig, Clark, Elliott, McNamee, Burton, Robson B, Bennett (Robson T), Davies, Ross, Sinclair

Scorers: Robson B - McNamee og

Harvey springs some surprises for the first game with lley, Tommy Robson, Scott and Marshall all left out. Clark is made captain and new signing Gibb is not yet considered fit enough for English football.

St James' is awash with sunshine, but neither side is shining in a poor start. United's long-ball tactics are being easily blunted and the Hammers play is pretty but ineffective.

Just before half-time Bennett - playing his first competitive game since January - has to be carried off after badly twisting the same knee that caused his absence - and is replaced by winger Tommy Robson. This allows Bryan Robson to move inside.

Half-time: Newcastle 0 West Ham 0.

51m - Bryan ROBSON shoots in from close range on the half turn after being set up by the outstanding Elliot (1-0).

The Magpies fail to wrap up the game and just before the end MCNAMEE puts through his own net when trying to clear a Dear effort (1-1).

Full-time: Newcastle 1 West Ham 1.

79m - With United well on top Bonetti makes two remarkable saves before a perfect pass from Elliot sets up ROBSON to hit the ball low into the corner (3-2).

Full-time: Newcastle 3 Chelsea 2

Position: 10th

The police received lots of complaints about the obscene chanting during the opening day match against West Ham and a plea is issued in the programme: "sing by all means but keep it clean." Although not as rough as recent meetings between the two sides it is still a feisty encounter although the game is ruined by the greasy pitch. Feyenoord manager Goos Brox (and his coach Ben Peeters) watch the game from the director's box and he is not impressed claiming United "rely on strength more than skills", whereas in contrast his team are "experienced and contain many internationals with a lot of skill".

Half-time: Newcastle 1 Nottm, Forest 0.

79m - Moore's shot appears to be over the line before Clark scoops it out with his hand. MOORE converts the penalty anyway (1-1).

Full-time: Newcastle 1 Nottm. Forest 1.

Position: 10th

Newcastle look well in control with their sound defence and quick, piercing attacks. But a linesman's flag and Davies' profligacy mean they fail to build on Robson's opener and Suggett equalises.

Sunderland (12th) - Roker Park - 49,807

McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb, McNamee, Burton, Scott, Robson B, Davies, Elliott, Allen (lley)

Scorers: Robson B - Suggett

Just before time SINCLAIR cracks home a cross from Elliot.

Full-time: Southport 0 Newcastle 2

United take the lead but an early injury to Craig forces a reshuffle and they completely lose their impetus.

Coventry (21st) - Highfield Road - 14,361

McFaul, Craig (lley), Clark, Gibb, McNamee, Burton, Sinclair, Robson B, Davies, Elliott, Allen

Scorers: Sinclair - Baker, Gibson

Full-time: Coventry 2 Newcastle 1

Position: 11th

Feyenoord are loaded with internationals and have won all four of their games in the Dutch League. Harvey has been on a spying mission and informs the players that their build-up is slow and that they lack determination. He wants at least a two goal lead. A fantastic display of attacking football with a starring role from 21-year-old Geoff Allen whose scintillating display of speed dribbling destroys van der Heide and provides the platform for the victory. United show that they are not just hard-workers as they beat the Dutchmen with their pace and speed of thought. The visitors are also guilty of overconfidence and a lack of courage as they are intimidated by United's hard tackling. Manager Pieters concedes that "it is a long time since we saw such a polished and professional outfit like Newcastle".

Feyenoord - SJP - 46,348

McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb, McNamee, Burton, Scott, Robson B, Davies, Elliott, Allen

Scorers: Scott, Robson, Gibb, Davies

Harvey makes a surprise team change, preferring Scott to Sinclair on the right, otherwise the team lines up as expected. As usual for an evening match the players have been told to sleep in the afternoon, but expectation and anxiety makes a siesta out of the question.

07m - Harvey's selection decision is vindicated almost immediately as SCOTT side-foots home a cross from Allen (1-0) and the first rocket lights up the night sky.

For the next half hour the Magpies pummel their shell-shocked visitors; shots rain in from all angles including an Allen pile driver that crashes against the bar.

35m - A second goal has to come and ROBSON goes horizontal to head in after Wyn Davies' 25 yarder rebounds off the underside of the bar.

42m - United are unrelenting and GIBB's speculative shot deflects off Israel and nestles in the corner of the net.

Half-time: Newcastle 3 Feyenoord 0.

Although United adopt a less gung-ho approach they still manage to hit the post (through Clark) and have a goal disallowed (Gibb).

70m - DAVIES (who has gone 21 games without a goal) scores with a typically forceful header (4-0).

Full-time: Newcastle 4 Feyenoord 0.

58m - A Hope free-kick is gloriously headed in by ASTLE (2-2).

66m - HARTFORD combines well with Clark and hits a cross-shot past McFaul (2-3).

Full-time: Newcastle 2 West Brom. 3

Position: 16th

The return in Holland takes place at Feyenoord's magnificent £4 million pound, 64,000 capacity stadium where two thirds are seated. Around 2,000 United supporters have made the trip, 1,200 of them travelling with the NUDA/Evening Chronicle trip. The Supporters Club offered two alternative packages: 1 day at £15 and 15s and 2 days at £19 10s with a match ticket included. They are joined by 39,000 screaming Dutchmen and their hooters, whistles and fireworks. It is quite an introduction to Europe for the Novocastrian novices. Although The Magpies sensibly adopt a defensive approach their lack of experience gets the better of them and they continuously boot the ball away and surrender possession. As a result, it is one-way traffic for virtually the whole game and United are indebted to an absolutely brilliant performance from the defence.

Feyenoord () - -

Feyenoord eventually make the breakthrough when Israel chips a free-kick over the United wall and KINDVALL hammers the ball across McFaul and into the far corner (0-1).

Half-time: Feyenoord 1 Newcastle 0

VAN DER HEIDE scores from close range (0-2) and United's four goal advantage is disappearing fast.

Just before the end Clark clears off the line before being carried off with a twisted knee.

Full-time: Feyenoord 1 Newcastle 0

Clark, Davies and McNamee join Moncur on the injured list following the tough encounter in Feyenoord and United are no match for the Traffordonians. The Fairs Cup exertions are making the League campaign difficult and United have dropped to 20th.

Half-time: Man. Utd. 2 Newcastle 0

LAW scores with a jet-propelled 20-yarder (0-3).

67m - With the home defence hesitating GIBB strides onto Elliot's pass and beats Stepney (1-3).

Full-time: Man. Utd. 3 Newcastle 1

Southampton - The Dell - 13,840

McFaul, Craig, Guthrie, Gibb, Burton, Elliott, Ross, Robson B, Scott, lley, Allen

Scorers: Robson - Channon (2), Burton og, Davies

77m - Ross sets up ROBSON (1-3).

79m - The Saints respond with a beautifully headed goal from Ron DAVIES (1-4),

Full-time: Southampton 4 Newcastle 1

United are very poor in the first-half and The Cockerels score with two opportunistic goals. It's a different story after the break and United - roared on by the crowd - have Spurs rocking. Harvey is full of praise for the crowd - "I've never known a support like it". United still only have a single victory from 11 league games.

Full-time: Newcastle 2 Tottenham 2.

Position: 16th

A typically "professional" performance from Leeds in which they control play and score through Charlton before sitting back on their lead and soaking up the United pressure stretching the rules along the way. Charlton and McNamee clash on numerous occasions. United once again look weak up front and it is possible Harvey will make a move for Hibernians £100,000 rated Colin Stein.

55m - Scott crosses and Robson heads against the bar.

Full-time: Newcastle 0 Leeds 1

Position: 20th

The game is played at Meadow Lane (home of Notts County) due to the fire which caused major damage to the City Ground. Both Forest's senior keepers are injured so they have taken Oxford reserve Brian Sherrat on loan and he is at fault for United's first three goals. Liverpool dominate from the start. Willie McFaul puts in a world-class performance for 85 minutes of the match before he inexplicably allows a soft shot from Thompson to pass through his arms and open legs. It is cruel on the young Irishman who had staged a one-man campaign to prevent Roger Hunt from equalling Pool's goal scoring record. Moncur suffers a broken nose and United director - and surgeon - Fenton Braithwaite resets it straight after the match.

Full-time: Liverpool 2 Newcastle 1

Position: 13th

Sporting finished runners-up to Benfica in the Portuguese League last season and are another side liberally sprinkled with full internationals. The heavens open before the game and there is torrential rain and thunderstorms during the game. United once again adopt a cautious approach for the away leg but this time the panicky football served up in Rotterdam is replaced by a wonderfully disciplined performance. Star of the show is skipper Moncur who operates as a sweeper and plays the role to perfection. Harvey says: "this is truly magnificent for us. We absolutely demoralised a team like Sporting on their own ground". And Sporting manager Sorin concurs "I thought Newcastle were magnificent. This side is extremely hard to beat".

Forty-eight hours of incessant rain have turned the home turf into a cloying mud bath which makes decent football nigh on impossible. Still disappointing that the tired looking Magpies can't find the net against bottom placed club.

Now facing the elements it is more even and a tiring United run out of steam.

United deservedly return from Highbury with a draw after a polished team performance. Joe Harvey is delighted with what he considers to be: "the best all-round team performance of the season" (so far). Club officials from Lisbon watch the match and Joe Harvey gets a shock when he is approached by two Portuguese embassy staff. They ask for - and are granted - permission to talk to the United players in their dressing-room and also quiz Harvey on his team selection.

Arsenal (5th) - Highbury - 34,168

Hope, Craggs, Clark, Gibb, McNamee, Moncur, Scott, Robson B, Horsfield, Arentoft, Sinclair (Foggon)

Scorers: Young

United are without Burton and Davies (Wales) and McFaul and Craig (Northern Ireland). As a result, John Hope makes his debut. McNamee has recovered from his thigh strain.

United's rookie 'keeper is nervous at the start but the first-half is uneventful and goalless.

Half-time: Man. City 0 Newcastle 0

Sinclair narrowly misses the target and Scott hits an upright.

YOUNG plays a 1-2 with Summerbee and then hammers a low shot past the advancing Hope (0-1).

Full-time: Man. City 1 Newcastle 0

Position: 9th

United have had a gruelling ten match run since their quarter final success seven weeks ago but are in good form. Over 75,000 all-ticket fans (a record for the competition) squeeze into Ibrox including 12,000 from Tyneside. It is a close, tense affair with very few clear cut chances and is far from a classic. United's defence are nothing short of heroic and 'keeper McFaul deservedly grabs the headlines with a couple of brilliant saves from Andy Penman (one of which is a penalty). Wyn Davies plays on despite suffering a broken nose.

Rangers - Ibrox - 75,580

McFaul, Craggs, Clark, Gibb, McNamee, Moncur, Scott (Sinclair), Robson B, Davies, Arentoft, Foggon

Rangers are smarting from finishing runners up to Celtic in the League and Cup. The pitch is heavy and this helps convince Harvey to start with McNamee and Foggon rather than Burton and Sinclair.

The Scots are doing most of the attacking but United's defence are not giving them a sniff of a goal and Robson squanders a couple of decent opportunities.

Just after the half hour McFaul is harshly adjudged to have fouled Persson and the referee awards a penalty. Penman hits the ball hard and true to McFaul's right but he brilliantly turns his shot around the post.

Just before half-time McFaul makes a world-class stop from ferocious 25-yard half-volley from the same player.

Half-time: Rangers 0 Newcastle 0

Rangers continue to do most of the pressing but they lack craft and imagination and the Magpies defence is cool, disciplined and courageous.

Full-time: Rangers 0 Newcastle 0

A jaded performance in which Joe Harvey is grateful for a point. United take the lead but The Scousers take control in the second period and grab a deserved equaliser. United - backed by twenty minutes of continuous chanting - finish the stronger as the game ends all square. A dog also makes an appearance and joins in the play until he is eventually removed.

Liverpool - SJP - 34,927

McFaul, Craggs, Clark, Gibb, Burton, Moncur, Scott, Robson B, Davies, Arentoft, Sinclair

Scorers: Davies - Hunt

Sinclair is preferred to Foggon and Burton replaces McNamee who has suffered a recurrence of his thigh muscle problem.

DAVIES is presented with an open goal after Pool's keeper Lawrence collides with defender Ross (1-0).

Half-time: Newcastle 1 Liverpool 0

68m - The Scousers take control and HUNT volleys home an unstoppable shot (1-1).

70m - Callaghan hits the post with a terrific shot.

Position: 8th

Harvey knows it's going to be sense and he finishes his programme notes with "now I must get my cigarettes - I reckon I might need a full packet tonight". It is a tough, physical game settled by goals from Scott and Sinclair. After the second the Rangers fans riot in an effort to get the game abandoned. Welsh referee Gow is forced to take the players off for seventeen minutes whilst the boys in blue bravely restore order; four Alsatians finally doing the trick. The rest of the match is played out with a line of blue and a mountain of bottles separating McFaul from the seething Scottish hordes. Liverpool manager Bill Shankly is an interested observer and is full of praise for the United defence. "They're a great back four and with a little bit more experience they could get in Liverpool reserves".

Scorers: Scott, Sinclair

Harvey recalls Craig who proved his fitness (and played superbly) in the Home Internationals; it is tough on Craggs who has performed so well in his absence.

The game continues from where they had left off seven days earlier with no quarter given or taken. It is a tough, physical game and when Davies and Mackinnon clash in the 14th minute the visiting fans hurl bottles onto the pitch and some of them encroach onto the field.

Half-time: Newcastle 0 Rangers 0

United force a succession of corners; the last of which sees SCOTT blast a brilliant cross-shot into the far corner (1-0). Hundreds of United fans spill onto the pitch in celebration and the referee threatens to take the players off if it happens again.

77m - Burton's free-kick is glanced to SINCLAIR by Davies' head and the Scot gleefully blasts the ball into the roof of the net from close range (2-0).

82m - Rangers fans hurl bottles onto the pitch and then invade the pitch riot in an effort to get the game abandoned and referee Gow is forced to take the players off for seventeen minutes whilst order is restored.

Ujpest Dozsa's players make up over half of the classy Hungarian national team and they have just completed their domestic double. They have won seven and drawn one of their previous games in the competition and beat record breaking Champions of 1968/69 - Leeds - in both legs. The Peacocks manager Revie says they are the "best club side in Europe".

Nearly 60,000 cram into St James' (one again breaking the record receipts) whilst hundreds more secure various precarious vantage points on buildings and trees around the ground.

The Magpies set off at blistering pace but the Hungarians slow the game down and United struggle to get their game together. Then, just after the hour, Moncur volleys home with his left-foot. Moncur gets a second and Scott adds a third; it is the first time in two years that Ujpest have let in more than two goals.

Ujpest Dozsa - SJP - 59,234

McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb, Burton, Moncur, Scott, Robson B, Davies, Arentoft, Sinclair (Foggon)

Scorers: Moncur (2), Scott

The Magpies set off at blistering pace banging long-balls up to Davies in an attempt to unsettle the Hungarian defence. But the visitors hold firm and the brilliant Gorocs starts to take control in midfield.

With the Hungarians slowing the game down United cannot get their game together and the visitors - with their next possession football - begin to get a measure of control. Consequently, McFaul is forced to make a couple of crucial saves before the half draws to a close.

Half-time: Newcastle 0 Ujpest Dozsa 0

United push forward more to try and force the play but the attack is still being held firm by the Magyars who continue to defend in depth.

63m - United are awarded a free-kick just outside the area. Gibb plays his standard ball through to Davies who takes the ball on his chest before hammering a shot against the keeper. The ball rebounds to captain MONCUR who volleys it in with his left-foot. It is his first senior goal (1-0).

73m - MONCUR plays a 1-2 with Arentoft before the Dozsa defence disintegrate in front of him. His shot is far from clean but it bobbles into the far corner (2-0).

83m - The Hungarians are well and truly rattled now and SCOTT adds a third after another 1-2 with the Dane (3-0).

90m - Solymosi's free-kick rockets into the net after the defensive wall breaks; however the referee had blown for full-time as he ran up to take the kick.

Full-time: Newcastle 3 Ujpest Dozsa 0

United's plane contains - discreetly hidden away - crates of champagne. Less than two hundred United fans also make the long trip behind the Iron Curtain. The Hungarians take a 2-0 lead in the first half and only a miraculous save from McFaul just before the break prevents their lead from being wiped out. Harvey stays calm and assures the players that if they can score the next goal the Hungarians will crumble. Moncur and Arentoft score in quick succession and Ujpest (facing the need to score six) throw the towel in and Foggon grabs a winner.

Ujpest Dozsa - 34,000

McFaul, Craig, Clark, Gibb, Burton, Moncur, Scott (Foggon), Robson B, Davies, Arentoft, Sinclair

Scorers: Moncur, Arentoft, Foggon - Bene, Gorocs

From the very start wave upon wave of attacks descend on the visitor's goal and McFaul is peppered with shots from all angles and distances. He makes a couple of stunning saves.

30m - The defence is battling bravely but just as they seem to have weathered the storm BENE lashes the ball into the far corner from a seemingly impossible angle (0-1).

43m - GOROCS' burst of speed leaves Craig trailing and he fires in from close-range (0-2). Then only a world class save from McFaul prevents Dunai from equalising the tie on aggregate.

Half-time: Ujpest Dozsa 2 Newcastle 0

46m - Straight from the kick-off newcastle win a corner. The keeper (under pressure from Davies) can oly punch the ball back to corner-taker Sinclair who clips the ball back in and MONCUR (with closed eyes) lashes it left footed and the ball is deflected into the roof of the net (1-2).

52m - Scott's shot is blocked by Dunai but the ball rebounds to ARENTOFT who hits a half-volley that leaves the keeper helpless (2-2). And, as Joe predicted, the hosts sag visibly and the Magpies assume total control.

67m - FOGGON runs from the half-way line, storms past a couple of defenders, lashes in a shot which the 'keeper Szentmihaly can only push on to the bar and then follows up to slam the ball in (3-2).

The game is played out with United in party mood and the home fans rising in appreciation.
