Northumbrian goalkeeper Bobby Robinson was signed from Sunderland in August 1952 and remained at Newcastle for two seasons in which he made five appearances.
He joined Sunderland in 1946 from Newbiggen Colliery Welfare and made his First Division debut in 1947. Although their reserve, he played 18 times during 1951/52 including both derbies. Bobby had refused to resign for Sunderland after being left out of their close-season tour of Holland.
With Jack Fairbrother having left during the summer Newcastle were in urgent need for back-up to Ronnie Simpson as the Scot was unable to get leave from his National Service Z training which he was undertaking in Yorkshire.
He had a difficult debut at Burnley with the United defence all at sea. He did all that could be expected and was knocked out twice. He also played against his old club a couple of days later before Simpson returned.
In October Bobby then got another three-game run with Simpson being dropped after allegedly suffering from a loss in confidence.
Robinson was less confident himself in these games, making a few mistakes. Notably a mix-up with McMichael led to him conceding a seventy-yard free-kick against Charlton.
He would not get another first-team game and was released at the end of the 1953/54 season.
