Charles Quinn(1893/94 and 1895/96)

Charles Quinn was mainly used at outside-right, but also featured on the inside as well as outside-left. A smart player he dodged well and had a decent shot which he used with regularity.

All but one of his appearances were in 1893/94 when he played in nearly all the games.

He lost his place in the side the following season and moved to Manchester City. The move proved fruitless and after returning to Newcastle to play for Trafalgar he ended up back at St James’ for the 1895/96 campaign.

Quinn was drafted in for the match at Liverpool, but gave a very weak performance in a heavy defeat.

Unfortunately, any abilities he had as a footballer were completely overshadowed by his off-field behaviour. On the 5th December he appeared at Newcastle Police Court charged with having unlawfully wounded a woman named Mary Taylor the previous Saturday night. The bone of her nose had been broken in several places, and her nose was very much distorted.

Quinn and another man had compelled her to go into a public-house, but she refused a drink and left the bar. They followed her, and, after a few words, Quinn struck her over the mouth. She hit him with her umbrella, but Quinn grabbed it off her and struck her in the face, knocking her down and rendering her insensible.

The Bench reduced the charge to one of (a brutal) assault and committed the prisoner to three months' hard (labour). It was further revealed that Quinn had previously been six times before the Bench for drunkenness and assaults.
