Dennis Martin made a shock move to Tyneside during United’s disastrous 1977/78 season. He got off to a great start with a memorable debut goal at Old Trafford, but it was downhill from there and he left five months later.
Newcastle manager Richard Dinnis had been struggling to strengthen his badly performing and understrength side. Despite Dinnis’ desperation it looked a strange and relatively expensive move for a player who was just about to turn thirty and had lost his place in the Cumbrians side.
Manager Bobby Moncur admitted he was surprised as he freely admitted that he was too inconsistent and "hasn't played well this season".
He played in most of the League games up to the turn of the year, but a dismal run over the Christmas period saw him dropped by new manager Bill McGarry. He was sold to Mansfield in March at nearly half the price paid for him.
