Geordie Hodgson was unlucky that his time coincided with United having a glut of exceptionally talented midfielders. Powerfully built with a decent touch and not without skill he perhaps lacked the pace and aggression to impose himself upon games at the highest level.
Gordon was an England Youth International who joined the club whilst still at school and even played some games for the reserves, during 1970/71, whilst still in full-time education.
He turned professional in the summer of 1971 and made his debut (aged 19) on the left of midfield at Nottm Forest at the end of the 1971/72 season.
Although still a a teenager Gordon was appointed skipper of the reserves in 1972/73 and when a mini injury crisis developed upfront, George was given the task of standing in. It would be his only real run in the side.
Hodgson hardly got a game during 1973/74 and became increasingly unhappy about his lack of game time. At the end of the season he signed for Fourth Division Mansfield, who were managed by former United coach Dave Smith. He would become something of a legend at Field Mill.
Made his debut in the 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest in April. It was reported that he showed some nice touches but lacked the pace and aggression to impose himself on the game.
Hodgson was drafted in as Macdonald’s replacement; but he failed to score -in any of the games he played.
Got a couple of run-outs on the League against Southampton (h) and Man City (a) and came on as a sub at Dundee United in the Texaco Cup.
