Duggie Graham thrived on plenty of work and his stylish full-back play was matched by his sartorial elegance off the pitch resulting in him being nicknamed "Baron" and "Duke" by his peers.

A bricklayer and joiner by trade he was spotted playing for Barrington United in the early stages of the War and was one of three Barrington players who signed as amateurs in April 1940. During the current season at Barrington he had usually been employed as a centre-forward, but also turned out at full-back and was even the goalkeeper for one match.

Duggie then signed as a pro for United in August 1940 and played regularly during the War years, notching an additional ninety appearances and one goal.

He had two reliable feet, read the game well and exhibited sound positional play. He also had an excellent turn of foot. He was an accomplished sprinter who took part in many foot handicaps during the close season, as did many other players at the club at the time.

Douglas dominated the left side of defence until he suffered a bad injury in the home match against Tottenham at the beginning of December during the promotion season of 1947-48.

By the time he'd recovered the left-back slot had been taken by Benny Craig and then Ron Batty and most of his remaining games were played on the right-flank.

By 1950/51 Cowell and McMichael were the established full-back pairing and Graham - who was approaching his thirties - was allowed to move on.

Season by Season

Doug Graham

1946/47 (36) (3)

Held the No. 3 shirt for most of the season.

1947/48 (16) (3)

Dougie started the season as the first choice left-back. Unfortunately a knee injury suffered against Tottenham in December robbed him of the rest of the season.

1948/49 (4) (2,3)

Couldn’t get into the team and asked for a transfer in November. His request was refused and attempts by Grimsby to sign him were rebuffed. Played in the last four games of the season (twice on either flank).

1949/50 (17) (2)

Having hardly featured he made a transfer request at the end of October, but this was turned down by the board at which point he was given a three-month run in the side at right-back.

1950/51 (1) (3)

Doug was one of nine players set to receive the maximum permitted benefit of £750 this season. During November both Grimsby and Preston were willing to meet the £8,000 asking price for Graham with him preferring Lancashire over Lincolnshire.
