Alan Guy was a striker who was capable of playing across the front line and performed very well for both the Juniors and the Reserves. Very sharp and reasonably fast with a good shot, he was a consistent scorer.
After a fine start to the 1975/76 season Alan was signed on as a contract player in September. He was already getting noted as a good prospect and scored regularly for both the reserves and juniors including a brilliant hat-trick against Bristol City. He was also selected for FA Youth training.
Alan made his first-team debut, just before his nineteenth birthday, in the League Cup tie against Gillingham in the 1976/77 season. He was also selected for a couple of league games and an Anglo-Scottish Cup tie too.
In 1977/78 Alan spent a period on loan at Shrewsbury and in March manager McGarry told him that he could leave and he was transfer listed. However, he played in the last match at Filbert Street and McGarry seemed to have changed his mind after he scored both goals in a friendly victory over Chesterfield. He was offered, and accepted, a new contract.
In 1978/79 Alan played in both the FA Cup ties against Wolves before he was signed for Peterborough by ex-United coach Peter Morris in a joint deal with Tony Smith. A couple of days later he scored twice on his debut for Posh.
