An Aberdonian, but came into prominence as a footballer with Forfar Athletic. At that time he continued to work in Aberdeen district, and in order to play frequently rose at 4.00am, because he had so far to travel.
In 1928 he was transferred to Liverpool, where he spent two seasons, after which he was transferred at a substantial fee to Newcastle United.
Lying well back, he was an extremely strong defender, and could give and take hard knocks. Rugged rather than brilliant.
It took him a while to establish himself in the team, but he made the pivotal position his own following the departure of Jack Hill. And he played in every game of the 1931/32 season including the FA Cup Final in which United beat Arsenal.
A subsequent injury meant that he was not assured of his place in the side in subsequent seasons and he hardly featured in 1936/37 with Jesse Carver being preferred.
He was released at the end of that campaign (aged 32), whereupon Hartlepools United secured his signature for a nominal fee which covered the accrued share of benefit he was owed. He later played for Gateshead and managed Whitley Bay and Ashington.
