Edward Connelly was a native of Cowdenbeath, and served his apprenticeship with Valleyfield Rovers and Rosslyn Juniors, a Fifeshire team. He joined Rosslyn from the junior ranks at the back end of 1933/34.
Dundee and Newcastle United both made offers to him in March 1935 and the Magpies landed him. He was only eighteen and had been in Junior football only a year when he was signed in Edinburgh by Andy Cunningham. Newcastle United regarded him as a star of the future.
A well-built lad and a clever ball manipulator who it was suggested at one time may have the possibilities of an Alec James as a schemer. He was at his best during the 1935/36 season when he played brilliantly in the Cup Ties.
When out of the picture in 1936/37 Mather said “I’m afraid we rushed him and as it has proved, that toning down process (I am referring to his play) has been necessary. We have even deemed it advisable to give Eddie a few runs in the Tyneside League side in which he has shown commendable spirit."
"I think his main fault has been his disposition to hold the ball too long and attempt too much. This is a day for teamwork, not individualism when you are trying to gain promotion”.
Connolly rarely featured during the following two seasons and his services were sought after by several clubs. He eventually moved to Luton (for their biggest fee) in March 1938,.
