Thomas Blyth first came to Newcastle from Durham University after which he spent some time with Sunderland Nomads before returning to Tyneside in January 1897.
Amateur Tom was a splendidly built young fellow who was over 12st in weight and had a good turn of speed.
He made his only appearance when he deputised for the rested Smellie in the home win over Burton Swifts in March. He scored the winner when, with a clever shot, he drove the leather past Gray.
For a more extensive biography of his full career see the Paul Joannou book "Newcastle United - The Ultimate Who's Who 1881-2014" and the accompanying supplement "The Ultimate Who's Who Supplement 1"
