With United struggling to survive in their first season back in the First Division Charlton decided that the attack needed beefing up. His first attempt to solve the problem involved bringing big, bustling Ian Baird on loan from Southampton.

He was only 20 when he arrived with his main attributes being his work rate and aggression. Consequently he was booked more times than he scored.

He wasn’t without skill though and his only goal was a majestic header against West Brom.

Charlton saw him as a player for the future and was willing to pay a small fee to make his move permanent, but Southampton wanted more than he was prepared to offer. Baird said: “I would love to come to Newcastle on a full-time basis. Southampton are pricing me out of a move and I’m unhappy about that”.
