Striker Rivière was born in the French overseas territory of Martinique and was well thought of at youth level, representing France at every level between U16 and U21.
Highly sought after he was snapped up by Saint-Ettiene and went on to play for Toulouse and Monaco. During that time he had a strike rate of 23%.
In July 2014 (aged 24) he joined Newcastle for a undisclosed fee assumed to be about £6m. With Ameobi and Remy having departed United were short on attacking options.
Pardew said “We have looked at Emmanuel for a while and we know he will score goals for us. He is quick, hungry for success and will love having 50,000 Geordies cheering him on”. Unfortunately, he would never have that pleasure.
In two seasons on Tyneside he made a grand total of 31 appearances and scored 3 goals. The first 2 strikes came in the win at Crystal Palace in the League Cup and he had to wait until the penultimate game of the 2014/15 season for his first (mishit) Premier League goal.
He spent the 2016/17 season on loan to Spanish side Osasuna where he failed to score in 17 games and then moved to Metz in August 2017.
Struggled badly and failed to score in the Premier League until the penultimate game of the season at already relegated QPR. His two other goals came in the League Cup at Crystal Palace.
Out injured for the first half of the season he made 3 further appearances without scoring.
