Goalkeeper Matt had attracted the interest of a number of clubs so United's signing of him during the summer of 1898 was seen as something of a coup.
He was a stalwart custodian whose unassuming demeanour on and off the field made him a whole host of friends in the North. He was a fine specimen of a country lad (14 stone plus) and his ability and judgement made him a formidable bulwark.
Fisting and kicking further than any other keeper in the League which was a great help to the team. He also used to head the ball away on occasion and even scored twice in friendlies against Brampton and Coventry.
One of the most highly-respected keepers of the time Matt was capped by England against Wales and selected for the Football League XI during the 1900/01 season.
Whilst unoccupied he often rested against a post with his arms folded or swung his arms to-and-fro.

He had an excellent season and was United's only ever present. Scored in the friendly against Brampton (as did every other player).
Selected for the English League for the match against the Irish League on November 10th. Missed 2 games.
