Newcastle in the Football League

In 1892/93 Newcastle East End applied, unsuccessfully, to join Division 1. They were offered a place in the newly formed Second Division, but turned it down for financial reasons.

In 1893/94 Newcastle joined the Football League for the first time, in the Second Division.

Following promotion Newcastle played in the First Division for the first time in 1898/99.

Newcastle won their first League Championship in 1904/5.

Newcastle suffered their first relegation in 1933/34.

Newcastle have been promoted seven times and relegated six times. In all, they have spent 94 seasons in the top flight and 28 seasons in the second tier.

Although Newcastle have always played in the top two divisions they have twice come perilously close to relegation to the third tier.

2015/16 - Relegated to Championship (after 6 seasons in PL).

2016/17 - Promoted to Premier (after 1 seasons in Ch).
