Position: 3rd

UNITED TRIUMPH IN TOUGH OPENER - Although the Premier League is launched the biggest crowd of the day is on Tyneside despite the heavy rain. Beresford, Bracewell and Venison make their debuts. United are 2-0 up after less than twenty minutes, but can’t find a third and Southend pull one back just before the hour mark. Clark calms the nerves with a third only for Benjamin to reply six minutes later. A winning start, but narrower than it should have been.

Vid

19/08 - FLC R1 L1: Newcastle 2 Mansfield 1 (1-0)

Mansfield (D2: 14th) - SJP - 14,083

Wright, Venison, Beresford, Howey, Kilcline, Scott, Brock (Carr), Peacock, Kelly (Quinn), Clark, Sheedy

Scorers: Peacock (2) - Stant

PEACOCK DOUBLE EDGES FIRST LEG - For the first time since the early sixties United enter the League Cup at the First Round stage and they also play the Stags for the first time in their history. Peacock gives United the lead after only two minutes but the Division 2 side play with determination and keep themselves in the game. And they get their reward midway through the second period when Stant equalises. With United out-of-sorts in attack Keegan brings on Micky Quinn and he helps create the chance for Peacock to grab the winner eight minutes from time.

TV

22/08 - D1: Derby 1 Newcastle 2 (0-0)

Derby (20th) - Baseball Ground - 17,522

Wright, Venison, Beresford, Howey, Kilcline, Scott, Carr, Peacock, Kelly, Clark, Sheedy

Scorers: Peacock , Clark - Pembridge

Position: 4th

RAM RAIDERS STUN COX’S MILLIONAIRES - Keegan is very proud to have beaten his old boss Arthur Cox, but they could have won by a lot more if they had converted more of the chances that their scintillating approach play produces. In a thrilling encounter Peacock and Clark put United in control with two goals in five minutes just after the break, but once again they concede in the last ten minutes to keep the match in the balance. It is the first victory at Derby for twenty years.

Mansfield (D2: 21st) - Field Mill - 6,725

Wright, Venison, Ranson, Howey, Kilcline, Scott, Carr, Peacock, Kelly, Clark, Sheedy

Scorers:

OVER THE FIRST HURDLE, JUST - It is Newcastle’s first ever appearance at Field Mill and in front of a vociferous crowd United are knocked completely out of their stride. A mixture of luck and an excellent performance from Tommy Wright is required to prevent a loss.

TV

West Ham (17th) - SJP - 29,855

Wright, Venison, Ranson, O’Brien, Scott, Howey, Carr, Peacock, Kelly, Clark, Sheedy

Scorers: Peacock , Kelly

Position: 4th

Another wonderful, dominating, attacking performance from Newcastle in which Peacock and Kelly get the goals on the verge of half time. Dicks is sent-off just before the end for an elbow on Franz Carr. Opposition manager Billy Bonds says they “played like 11 Kevin Keegan’s”.

Luton (21st) - SJP - 27,059

Wright, Venison, Ranson, O’Brien, Scott, Howey, Carr, Peacock, Kelly, Clark, Sheedy

Scorers: Clark, Kelly

Position: 2nd

The Magpies’ power and panache simply blows the opposition away. Clark opens the scoring and Kelly nets the second on the stroke of half-time. United’s mesmerising one-touch football once more warrants more goals, but no one is complaining.

THE IRISH EYES ARE SMILING - Tommy Wright is picking the ball out of the net with only two minutes on the clock, but for the next eighty eight minutes the Northern Ireland international is unbeatable, producing a world class performance to save United on numerous occasions.
