WHAT A BORE, NEWCASTLE - Despite Suddick’s best efforts the performance is at best sluggish and at worst awful. The Canaries are no better. Suddick comes closest when after beating three defenders his shot hits the underside of the bar and bounces down on the line.

08/11 - CotN: Middlesbrough 4 Newcastle 3 (1-1)

Middlesbrough - Ayresome Park - 5,221

Rotherham (5th) - Millmoor - 11,427

Hollins, Keith, McMichael, Wright, McGrath, Bell, Hughes, Neale, Leek, Allchurch, J Wilson

Position: 13th

LEEK WASTES CHANCES - WILSON PERFORMING - the forward line is rejigged to no avail as despite making plenty of chances their forward play is feeble in its finishing. 61m - Allchurch appears to control the ball with his chest before slamming it home, but the referee believes he used his hand. Youngster Wilson plays intelligently and shows tip-top promise on his debut.

18/11 - D2: Newcastle 5 Bristol R 2 (3-1)

Bristol R (19th) - SJP - 23,215

Hollins, Keith, McMichael, Wright, McGrath, Bell, Hughes, Hale, White, Allchurch, J Wilson

Scorers: White (3), J Wilson, Allchurch - Jarman, Hooper

Position: 9th

Though the opposition is the poorest so far this season Len White is back to his incomparable best and scores a superb hat-trick. He is aided and abetted chiefly by another fine performance from Wilson who opens the scoring after two minutes. Bell misses from the spot.

BEST THAT THREE BOB COULD BUY -THIS DERBY HAD EVERYTHING - A thrilling game in which no quarter is given or taken. Although it is not a game for the purist it is non-stop end-to-end

16/12 - D2: Leyton Orient 2 Newcastle 0 (1-0)

Leyton Orient (2nd) - Brisbane Road - 13,261

Hollins, McKinney, McMichael, Wright, McGrath, Bell, Hughes, Allchurch, White, McGuigan, Wilson J

Scorers: White,

Position: 14th

WATCH THAT STEP UNITED - Despite their lofty position the Londoners do not have to play well to have the ascendancy for three-quarters of the game. The Magpies play like a team of strangers, lacking both understanding and finishing power. The second goal comes after the Newcastle players stop playing, believing that Bell had been fouled.

23/12 - D2: Newcastle 0 Preston 2 (0-0)

Preston (18th) - SJP - 18,775

Hollins, McKinney, McMichael, Wright, McGrath, Bell, Suddick, Allchurch, White, McGuigan, Wilson J

Scorers: Biggs, Dawson

Position: 17th

Although struggling Preston are very poor, the Magpies lack craft and cohesion and are at times utterly lacking in spirit. It is the worst home performance of the season so far and the football is often exasperating in the xterms, not surprisingly the crowd falls silent for long periods.

26/12 - D2: Newcastle 3 Middlesbrough 4 (1-2)

Middlesbrough (21st) - SJP - 21,038

Hollins, McKinney, Ferguson, Wright, McGrath, Dalton, Hughes, Harrower, McGuigan, Allchurch, Tuohy

NOT SO POSH UNITED - A humiliating home defeat at the hands of the Third Division side and although United are aggrieved by some of the referees decisions “Posh” deserved their victory. They were the best side for the first hour and showed more confidence, cohesion and direction. They rode their luck in the last thirty minutes, but defended bravely and broke away to score the only goal sixteen minutes from time.

THOMAS ANSWERS DOUBTERS - New signing Thomas makes his debut and does reasonably well although it is clear that he needs better service than he got today.

Leeds (19th) - Elland Road - 17,209

Hollins, McKinney, Ferguson, Wright, Thompson, Dalton, Suddick, Allchurch, Thomas, White, Tuohy

Position: 14th

UNITED’s GEORDIE HEROES GET UNITED OUT OF PICKLE - Newcastle’s full and half-backs are all geordies and they defend magnificently throughout in a much improved performance. It is a grim affair bursting at the seams with dangerous play which the referee fails to keep in check. United should have a goal after only seven minutes when Wright’s shot from 25-yards hits the underside of the bar and bounces a couple of feet over the line before goalkeeper Younger grabs it. However, to everyone’s astonishment, the referee Mr. Pickles waves play on. Tuohy grabs the only goal just before half-time.
