Ivan Toney, was signed on a long-term deal from Northampton Town on 6th August 2015, he was 19 at the time. The fee was undisclosed but later reported to be £200,000.

Chief scout Graham Carr had played for and managed the club and still lived in the area. "I saw him numerous times and he caught my eye - the size of him and his first touch, he showed great potential".

He had come through the Cobblers' youth ranks and scored 13 goals in 60 senior games. A move to Wolves in December 2014 fell through due to a failed medical.

Newcastle football development manager Peter Beardsley said: "We have been very impressed with Ivan already. He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the club."

He was a regular scorer for the Under-21 side and was named Barclays Under-21 Premier League Player of the Month for September.

Toney made four substitute appearances for the first-team, two in the League and two in the League Cup.

A series of loans then followed to lower league clubs: Barnsley (2015/16), Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe (2016/17) and Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe (2017/18).

Peterborough came in for him during the summer of 2018 and although United originally said they were only prepared to loan him out they eventually agreed to sell for £300,000 in August.

“The time was right for me to finally make a full-time move,” Toney stated. “I wasn’t playing at Newcastle. They just kept loaning me out and that can get annoying after a while”.

Two seasons at London Road brought 49 goals in 94 games and the attention of numerous clubs.
