Tommy Casey signed for the Magpies in August 1952 after impressing in a trial match. During most of his time on Tyneside he vied with Charlie Crowe for the left-half slot.

He was a sound all-round type of player who always played for the full ninety-minutes. There was nothing that reflected outstanding polish in his play, but he rivaled Scoular for starting off in top gear and finishing on that.

He was quick and keen to the tackle and proved an effective line of defence. Although he rarely commanded a regular place in the side he was an Irish international and played for his country in the World Cup Finals in 1958. He won 12 full caps in all.

He also played in the 1955 Cup Final as a replacement for the injured Charlie Crowe.
