The new look Milburn Stand and Leazes End had increased the ground capacity to over 50,000 for the first time since the Leazes End was demolished in the late seventies, but it was to be a frustrating season for the Gallowgate faithful.
The expenditure on the ground meant that the funds available for transfers were limited and Bobby Robson was forced to start his rebuilding with a mixture of South American imports and "honest pros" from lesser-lights. The only "major" signing was that of Carl Cort who was brought in to replace Duncan Ferguson. Unfortunately, they all struggled for form and/or fitness.
Injury ruled Alan Shearer out for half the season and with Carl Cort suffering a similar fate the Magpies had to rely extensively on the youthful Ameobi and the ageing Gallacher. Not surprisingly they struggled to find the net; and scored 19 less goals than in the previous League campaign.
Consequently, despite making a decent start (and topping the table at one point) they spent most of the season stranded in midtable and finished with 1 point less than in 1999/00.
There was little progress in the Cups either with Newcastle losing in Birmingham in both domestic Cups.
United did accept a place in the Intertoto Cup which represented a possible route into the UEFA Cup.
