With Martin Burleigh having walked out during the summer of 1974 Tony Bell, who was nineteen at the time, was promoted from the Juniors to the Reserves.
He got his first start in the Texaco Cup match against Southampton at the end of November.
A month layer an injury to McFaul meant he made his Division 1 debut when United travelled with a makeshift team to White Hart Lane. He made some really good saves and played well for the majority of the game, but conceded three times in a disastrous seven-minute spell which was precipitated by him conceding a disastrous own-goal. Unfortunately the television cameras were there to witness it.
He was handed a free transfer in May and joined North Shields a couple of months later.
