Eddie Edgar was one of the numerous 'keepers who down the years have made their debut when very young and only been given a single chance between the sticks.
During his time as an amateur in the Junior set up he represented Northumberland. He became an apprentice professional in the summer of 1973 and after signing full Pro forms a year later he established himself in the Juniors in 1974/75.
Edgar was called up for the FA Cup 6th Round tie at Derby in 1975/76, when both Mahoney and McFaul were unfit. A flu and injury-ridden United were beaten 4-2.
He was only twenty at the time and had only played a few reserve games. He only found out he was playing a few minutes before kick-off and did as well as could be expected. Edgar was released in April and joined Hartlepool in July.
His son, David, made 13 (10) appearances for Newcastle between 2006/07 and 2008/09.
Takes over from Tony Bell in the Juniors and makes his first appearances for the Reserves.
With Mahoney one of the players suffering from flu and McFaul injured Edgar travelled down to London with the League Cup Final party. He made his one and only appearance in the 4-2 defeat at Derby in the FA Cup 6th Round.
Made 75 appearances for Hartlepool and then, following a loan stint with New York Cosmos moved to Canadian side London City.
