United lost star man Sammy Weaver to Chelsea during the summer.

There were a number of new faces with Bob Ancell taking over at left-back and Tommy Mooney and Archie Livingstone supplementing the side's attacking options.

In the first half of the season they enjoyed some big victories (Doncaster were beaten 7-0 and both Norwich and Swansea were seen off by 5-1) but they still lost 9 times and were in 6th place.

Once again United seemed to either win or lose with only five drawn games all season. Five defeats in a row in January and February including a 4-0 thrashing by Chesterfield saw the team tumbling down the League.

Coupled with their Third Round Cup defeat against Preston this represented - up until that time - United's longest losing streak.

They redeemed themselves with eight wins in the last ten games which was enough for a fourth place finish.

Despite the fact that the average attendance went up there were some disastrous turn outs at the turnstiles. Most notable was the midweek fixture against Nottingham Forest which was witnessed by approximately 4,000 people.
