It was back down to 4th in 1907/08 as United's form faltered from Christmas onwards as they won only five of the last twenty matches.

The defeat at home to Manchester United in October was the team's first League reverse at SJP since November 1905; a record run of 31 games. Amazingly the run ended in style as the 1-6 defeat is one of United's worst ever home results.

The 8-0 home victory over Birmingham a month after the Manchester mauling was the third time in six years that Newcastle had beaten a team by eight goals in Division 1.

Despite their League disappointments the side reached the FA Cup Final for the third time in four years. This time they were matched against Wolves, a mid-table Second Division side. Not surprisingly United were overwhelming favourites. But once again Newcastle's footballing "scientists" flopped and floundered against their faster and more determined opponents.

The average attendance dropped by 3,000.

United broke their transfer record again when they paid out £1,600 to sign Scottish international outside-left George Wilson.

Newcastle v Grimsby

R1 - Forest have been struggling in the League but they give United a tough game on a dangerously hard pitch.

R2 - At the start of the second period West Ham lost custodian Kitchen, but even though United were the more aggressive side their famed smooth-running "machinery" broke down against a worrying opposition and they needed two goals in the last 15 minutes.
